With a firework of illuminations and events, the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS™ once again transformed the German capital into a unique glittering metropolis for a two-week period in 2007. Historical landmarks and places in Berlin, such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Radio Tower, Berlin Cathedral and the TV Tower and a further 40 objects, were spectacularly staged with lighting, events, projections and fireworks. In addition to its role as a sponsor for the projects “TV Tower, Palais am Festungsgrabengraben and Lichtdach am DomAquarée”, A&O Technology was directly involved in four illumination projects at the festival in cooperation with lighting designer Andreas Boehlke, who was the source of ideas and creative head for 35 projects. Jens Probst (A&O Vision) was responsible for the programming. A&O Technology provided numerous lighting systems from its rental park for the 12-day event.
At Alexanderplatz, FALCON BEAM 7 kW illuminated the 368 metre high television tower in a half-hour light show. The FALCON BEAMs were positioned at equal intervals at the foot of the TV tower. A programmed show was played automatically and provided moving and dynamic images on the tower. Around a third of the light colours were orange, the CI colour of the project sponsor BSR (Berliner Stadtreinigung). During the course of the light show, the FALCONs moved outwards in a helix shape, acting as searchlights and conjuring up columns of light in the Berlin night sky.
However, before the FALCON BEAM 7 kW could set the scene for the Berlin TV tower, they first had to travel a long way from Shanghai. A few days earlier, they had been integrated into the lighting design for the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics 2007 by lighting designer Robert “Bob” Dickinson.
In a second project, a total of six A&O Searchlights were used on a two-metre-high scaffold at the entrance to the passage near the DomAquarée. The devices were staged as static light columns to form a white canopy of light that could be seen over the nearby park as far as the Nikolai neighbourhood.
SKY FALCON ARC colour 1.2kW were used for the third project, the illumination of the Palais am Festungsgraben. The devices were mounted directly in front of the façade of the palace and bathed it in coloured light over a large area. The light choreography programmed with colour changes was automatically controlled by an e-cue system.
In addition, a ship floating on the Spree was equipped with SKY FALCON® ARC colour 1.2 kW. Various buildings on the riverbank were illuminated from the water. The devices were mounted on both sides of the ship and produced slow colour changes on the passing buildings.
The festival was accompanied by numerous art and cultural events centred around the theme of light. The initiators and organisers of the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS™ are City Stiftung Berlin, Union Investment Real Estate AG, lighting designer Andreas Boehlke and festival organiser Birgit Zander with her agency Zander & Partner Event-Marketing.
